Homemade Chocolate Syrup

February 20, 2013 by Tiffany 1 Comment

Healthier Homemade Chocolate Syrup | Feel Great in 8

My toddler is obsessed with chocolate milk. “Chocolate milk, please?” is literally the most repeated phrase in our house right now.

I try to say yes to my kids as often as I can, especially about the little stuff like this, but it was really hard for me to give in knowing that every time I poured a little Hershey’s syrup in her milk I was adding this…

High Fructose Corn Syrup,Corn Syrup,Water,Cocoa, Sugar,Contains 2% or Less of: Potassium Sorbate (a Preservative),Salt, Mono and Diglycerides, Xanthan Gum, Polysorbate 60, Vanillin, Artificial Flavoring.

Yuck.

So, I was super excited to find an all natural, unprocessed, recipe for chocolate sauce over at Deliciously Organic. I made a few minor adjustments and now it is a staple at our house.

I love that I can say yes to Anniston’s incredibly cute “chocolate milk, please?” without feeling guilty. Plus, I add just a little to my milk occasionally and kick my chocolate craving in a much healthier way.

Homemade Chocolate Syrup
{makes almost 2 cups}
Ingredients:
2/3 cup pure maple syrup
1 cup water
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
4 teaspoons vanilla
Directions:
Warm water and maple syrup in a saucepan over medium heat until just starting to bubble. Whisk in cocoa powder. Continue to whisk until completely incorporated, it will take a minute or two. Remove from heat and whisk in vanilla. Poor into a glass jar and scoop out a tablespoon or two to add to cold or warm milk. It is super yummy as an ice cream topping too, but you didn’t hear that from me. 😉 Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

    This is great! Thank you. It is not as sweet as the commercialized brand, but that should be a good thing 😉
